The Real Meaning of Independence
While it is very much in vogue these days to think about independence purely in self-interested ego terms, such as “being, having, doing whatever I want on my terms,” I think this is a very narrow – and insufficient meaning of the word.
During this past week I was in New York City. I spent four hours at new exhibitions at the Metropolitan Museum that contained photographs and paintings from the Civil War Era, circa 1859 to 1877.
I contemplated what Independence means in the broader sense of the word. For me, and I think for our Founding Fathers, it went far beyond self-interest. True Independence is being “free” to live with purpose: and while purpose begins inside, it extends outward.
The real meaning of Independence is to be free to pursue your purpose with passion, to make your difference on Earth. It is pursuing that which is of higher value, not only for you, but for others and society.
Independence is being free to pursue the happiness, joy, and fulfillment that comes from living a life that has meaning. And, the only life that has meaning is one in which you pursue making an important difference — for others, for society, for all those who live on Earth.
As you celebrate Independence Day, consider the purpose you want to passionately pursue – the difference you are free to make, because of the country in which you live.
Then, in some way, make that difference: show you care about those you love, the people you know, your neighbors. Make a contribution to a cause in which you believe, do a kind act for a stranger, or anonymously make a difference for someone in need.
Spread your wings — and live the real meaning of Independence today.
