MITRA KHAYYAM

I caught up with Mitra this past week and asked her some questions. I’ll be blogging about those answers as well as statements she provided as one of the five nominees for Emerging Entrepreneur.

What is Mitra’s passion that drives her forward as an entrepreneur? She has always been interested in art, design, and the fashion world. Even as a young girl, she created her own fashion magazines and newsstands to sell them to her friends. Today she combines her passion and business savvy into her own business, Blood is the New Black.

SMALL BUSINESS COACH: MARKETING IDEAS

As a small business coach, I know how important marketing ideas are. I got Mitra to open up and share her best marketing idea! Here it is: “to listen to our customers, openly engage in dialogue with them, and to give them credit for our successes.” Mitra uses social media platforms to have dialogues with her customers.

SMALL BUSINESS COACH: ADVICE TO START UPS

“Do everything with integrity.” Remember that your name is the one thing you will have for the rest of your life. It’s the most valuable thing you have so present yourself with integrity.

WHY WOULD EMPLOYEES WORK FOR MITRA?

It’s the friendly creative environment that she and her company foster. The company encourages creativity. It is an environment that focuses on problem solving and the staff works within this creative, problem solving community. Mitra engages her employees for new ideas and creative ways to operate successfully.

SMALL BUSINESS COACH: VALUES DRIVE BUSINESS

Mitra knows the importance of values in business. As a small business coach, I’ve seen how an entrepreneur’s values help determine their level of success. What are Mitra Khayyam’s top 3 values (and how do they help her increase her bottom line)?

  1. Honesty
  2. Integrity
  3. Solid work ethic

Honesty translates into profit because of the trust that our business partners extend to them. Integrity is that we always deliver what we promise. If something doesn’t work out as promised then they make every effort to make it right. Integrity turns into profits because instead of looking for a “fast buck” they look for long term growth and sustainably profits. A solid work ethic translates into profits “because as a business owner I am not afraid to roll up my sleeves and perform any task at hand.”

BLOOD IS THE NEW BLACK

Mirtra’s company, Blood is the New Black is a men’s and women’s tee shirt collection that spotlights the artists who create the designs for each shirt. They have used the unique art work of over fifty artists since they began operations in 2004. Customers are encouraged to learn about the artists. The company prints their name each shirt label and their website on the hangtag on each shirt.

MITRA’S COMPANY HAS IMPACTED HER INDUSTRY

It has done this by breaking free from the idea that graphic tee shirts need to be a billboard for a brand. They put their artists, not the name of the company, first. Instead of having a logo on each shirt, they have an artist’s unique art on each shirt. They also do all their work in the United States, thus proving one doesn’t have to outsource production to other countries to make a profit.

MITRA GIVES BACK TO HER COMMUNITY

She gives exposure to her artists and thereby gives back to the artistic community. She both spotlights the artists on her company’s website and spotlights artists, designers, architects, musicians on her blog. They have also created shirts for communities in need. For example, they created a special shirt design for the Nashville Red Cross flood relief, Mercy Corps Japan Tsunami relief, and various pet shelters. When she creates a special shirt for a non-profit cause, all the profits from the sale of that shirt are donated to the cause.
