Small Business Coach: The Amazing Power of Conscious Choice

Small Business Coach

As a business owner, every day you make choices – sometimes 100’s of them. You chose the priorities for your company. You chose which phone calls you make, and accept, and which you don’t. You choose how you use your time. You choose with whom you meet. You choose how you interact with others. You choose which commitments you make and whether you keep your commitments.

You chose what time you come to work and when you leave – and whether you take your work home with you or when you leave work you switch into personal time.

As a small business coach I can tell you that the choices you make and the results they create will determine the level of your business success.

Conscious Choices

Conscious choices begin with becoming aware. You make choices consciously when, instead of just “reacting” to situations you take time to “reflect and respond.”

Conscious choices occur when you become aware of both your options and why you are making the choice. You consider both the impact of your choices today and tomorrow.

Are your choices in your business’ best interest?

Do your choices support your important goals or are your choices taking you down a side path?

Will your choices lead you to less business success or to greater business success?

Your conscious choices become more powerful when you make them using the 3 points of awareness:  yourself, others, and the world, which is your environment such as the community or society of which you are a part.

Consider only your needs or wants, or deliver your product and services the way that YOU want them,  but not your customers, and you miss the real power of making conscious choices.

Likewise, create company policies that only consider the business (as if the business and your people were separate, when the truth is they are parts of an inter-related whole), and you end up with a team that doesn’t enjoy being at work or value working with you.  How will that affect your business success?

Fail to consider the actual needs of your community or the world around you and you miss the most important trends and problems that need solving. As a result you fail to become conscious of some of the most important opportunities to create business success.

However, when you consciously choose to consider the needs and wants of yourself, your people and clients, and the world in which your business operates, you embrace the true power of being conscious. You expand your conscious awareness from just yourself to considering how your business can positively affect others and the world around you.

Successful entrepreneurs, like Steve Jobs and Bill Gates, built empires by making the conscious choice to consider what the people who worked for them wanted (like flexible hours, creative environments in which they were praised and appreciated, and perks like stock options).

They also make the conscious choice to consider what their customers wanted and how their products could solve real problems in the world around them, such as the work place and how people could communicate better, both in the workplace and personal lives – through the software and creative devices both men’s companies are constantly creating.

As a result, you position your business for maximum expansion and growth because you are consciously choosing a path for your business that considers yourself, others, and what is occurring in the world around you.

  1. Often easy to consider yourself and even your business. A true socially responsible business entreprenuer considers the ESG factors (environment, society, goverance) that JV discussess as “the people who work for you” – governance and the “world around you” – environment and society. A wise, systems thinking approach!
