Habit # 5 – Keep Your Word
Do you sometimes find yourself making promises you don’t keep? Are you so overscheduled that you often find it difficult to keep your commitments?
Have you ever met someone and as you got to know them, realized their word was worthless? They made endless promises, but seldom followed through on them. They were late for phone calls, failed to show for appointments, or didn’t deliver on time.
Do you feel like you can depend on them? Do you want them on your team? And, do you want to do business with them?
As a small business coach, I want you to think about a person you know who is totally dependable. You see them, and their word, as being golden. You know they are trustworthy because they have a track record of keeping their word. How do you feel about doing business with them? And, is this someone you want on your team?
Not only is it important to keep your word with others, it’s also important to keep you word with yourself. Why? Because every time you keep your word to yourself, you increase your level of trust in yourself. You lay down a neural pathway in your mind that links your word with creating the results you say you’ll achieve.

However, when you break your word to yourself, you break the connection between your word and the results you claim you’ll achieve. And, the more often you break that connection, the more likely you are to feel doubt whenever you say you’ll do something.
As a small business coach, I want you to imagine how much money it would cost you if every time you made a financial goal, a part of you actually doubted you would accomplish it. If you want to become a millionaire, you can’t afford to break your word, to yourself or others. Instead you must keep your word so that you build up a strong belief in yourself and your commitments.
Conscious Millionaires understand the importance of keeping their word. It’s how they build trust in themselves and it’s how they show others they are dependable. They set high standards, both for themselves and for anyone with whom they are involved financially. They make it habit to keep their word because they know the importance of their word being as good as gold!
For example: make “honesty and integrity” two of your business values, communicate these to your customers, and then follow through with action by only making commitments that you can keep.
